    Wildlife Control

By Nick Lythgoe 26 May, 2020
Unfortunately at this time of year the sight of dead animals on our roads is a common sight. This weekend I was called by a homeowner in Inchbrook near Nailsworth who had an injured and dying badger on his lawn. He asked if I could attend and put the animal out of its misery. This is the second time in recent years that this has happened to him and the last time, he called the RSPCA, who took over 5 hrs to arrive. I am on the register with Gloucestershire Constabulary as part of their humane dispatching team and as such I called in the incident to the control room. It was decided that as the animal was not on the highway and on private land that the police did not need to attend the incident and I was able to complete the call.

Its that time of year when foxes are having cubs and are naturally more hungry. A couple of foxes have been making a nuisance of themselves on fields near the playing fields in Randwick. Having lost chickens and a duck the frustrated landowner asked us to take a look. We were already on the land managing the rabbits and we're seeing the foxes regularly, so on our outings now we are taking a foxing rifle.

On this beautiful estate, that is home to Bangrove Farm Shoot, I was asked by gamekeeper Connor to assist with the ongoing deer and fox control. The estate is home to large volumes of Roe, Fallow and Muntjac deer.

After under going security vetting and having completed the necessary training by Lantra I am now on the police approved dispatchers list for Gloucestershire Constabulary. Gloucestershire are one of the few forces that operate an organised scheme to deal with deer and other animal dispatch following road traffic collisions. At the request of Gloucestershire Police control centre we are on standby day or night to assist the police at the roadside.

Worgans Wood manager Dan had noticed increased deer and squirrel damage in the 50 acre wood that he looks after. He called me to go up and have a look, after confirming his suspicions I embarked on regular visits to keep the populations of both species at a manageable level.

I was already involved with the deer and boar management at nearby Ley Park when the pigeons started to make inroads into the winter crops at Stud Farm. Don the farmer asked me if I wouldn't mind looking at reducing their numbers. After observing their habits I set up a couple of hides and some decoys and sat out with one of my faithful spaniels and got to work. Both farmer and spaniel were happy with the results!
